TUI Travel Emission Cuts to ContinueBy Nick Harper - 31 August 2009
In 2007-08, the airline emitted 75.7g of carbon dioxide per revenue passenger kilometre, which was among the top performers of both budget and scheduled airlines. TUI UK saved a total of 34,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide through fuel efficient practices and this performance resulted in an 8% reduction of the group’s carbon footprint on the previous year. TUI owned Thompson Airways is scheduled to be the European launch customer for the upcoming Boeing 787 Dreamliner which promises a further reduction of up to 20% in carbon emissions and a 60% noise reduction compared to their existing fleet. Stephanie Draper, director of Forum for the Future praised, “Challenges like climate change and resource constraints will define the sector in the next decade, so taking serious action to address them remains critical. We congratulate TUI Travel on what they have done so far and urge them to keep their foot on the accelerator towards a sustainable future.” The group’s carbon reduction isn’t restricted to activity in the air. An automated PC overnight shutdown is expected to save a further 2500 tonnes of carbon per year, a car share scheme has been set up that is used by 300 members of staff and over 230 First Choice shops are on green energy contracts, which equates to 28% of the total energy used by TUI UK and Ireland. The TUI 2008 Sustainable Development Report revealed that TUI UK and Ireland and its customers raised £1.7m for the World Care Fund during the previous year of trading. The World Care Fund raises carbon finance for ClimateCare projects around the world.
