Carbon offset radio debateBy Justin Francis - 23 November 2009 The last thing you want to hear 2 minutes before going on live radio in the US to discuss the pretty complex world of carbon offsets is that they have a surprise guest joining the conversation; that its a Harvard University Professor who heads up their JFK Environmental Centre; and that he has strong views on offsets that he would like to share with you.... Now I've learnt a little about the offset world over recent months, but I wasn't fancying taking this guy on head to head! I get to start first and lay out my case. Then there is a break and he replies. Imagine my relief when he says 'I tend to agree with Mr Francis!' You can listen to it here. http://www.scpr.org/programs/patt-morrison/2009/11/20/pay-more-pollute-more-the-problem-with-carbon-off-/. For those interested there is a part after a while when he explains why offsets are bad, but cap and trade is good - this clarified several things for me. I also did an interview for CNN yesterday, this will be broadcast from Copenhagen next month, and might have a BBC Breakfast slot next week. Next week we will be the first travel agent in the world to have a flight search which compares not only prices, but carbon emissions, of flights. It does not cover some airlines or routes, but you can try a version of it here http://www.globaltravelmarket.co.uk/flights-engine2/?client=responsibletravel.com. Our message will be 1) a continutation of our reduction (not offset) story and b) to say we were the first business to enable travellers to compare the responsible tourism practices of holidays, and now we will be the first to enable travellers to compare the emissions of different airlines.
