Two new trips to Madagascar are set to play an important role in preserving and enhancing the island’s woodland resources. For the duration of each of the trips - organised by adventure travel specialists Pioneer Expeditions - the equivalent of one tree per person per day will be planted in a partnership with the operator’s agents in Madagascar and a local NGO.  A similar scheme in 2008 made a significant contribution to the reforestation process, raising funds for the planting of 230,000 trees.

Pioneer Expeditions is offering two different trips for 2009.  The first explores the east coast of Madagascar on a 13-day journey into the island’s little known areas in a programme that offers everything from jungle treks to white water rafting, and beautiful beaches to wildlife encounters.

The 12-night Benahy Descent delivers a rafting expedition down a narrow river and through canyons, diverse habitats and some of the planet’s most important biodiversity.

Leisa Lavender, Pioneer Expeditions’ business development manager, says:

“There is so much written about responsible tourism but it can sometimes be difficult for travellers to see exactly how and where their contribution is benefiting the environment and local communities.

“Anyone travelling to Madagascar with Pioneer Expeditions in 2009 will be part of programme which has, in the past year, played a major role in the island’s reforestation through the planting of almost a quarter of a million trees.”

Pioneer Expeditions’ Madagascar East Coast Explorer costs £1495 per person and has departures between October and December 2009. The Benahy Descent is priced at £1695 per person and has various departure dates throughout the year.

Prices exclude international flights but include transfers, all internal transportation and accommodation in a mix of hotels and camping on a mixed board basis.
