Having had to cancel, then reschedule, the World Conference on Responsible Tourism to be held later this year in Belize, Ron Mader of planeta.com has announced an online discussion of Responsible Tourism to celebrate responsible tourism week. The responsible tourism web debate will take place from May 18-22 and will focus on responsible tourism efforts being made across the globe. With the theme "Five Days: Fifty Ways to make Tourism more Responsible" the debate is hoped to attract a huge response and will be held over a variety of platforms including twitter, Facebook, flickr and YouTube.
Discussions during the responsible tourism debate will be monitored and moderated according to the wishes of individual websites, anyone wishing to add their views on, or take part in the debate should tag relevant web pages with the hashtag #rtweek2009.
Each day of the debate, Planeta.com will highlight key responsible tourism information for debaters, and the website’s Wiki page will be regularly updated throughout responsible tourism week.
In the invitation sent out by Planeta founder Ron Mader, key responsible tourism themes for reflection were outlined:
“GFC - What are the best ways to support responsible tourism initiatives
during the economic recession?
Education - Is there interest in creating a code of conduct for academics?
CBT - How should community-based tourism operations be evaluated? Are
there suggestions for making improvements?
Finance - What is Responsible Travel Philanthropy?
Hospitality – what constitutes Responsible Hospitality Management?
Aviation – how it it possible to Fly Responsibly?
More broadly what is required to be Carbon Responsible?
What makes a Destination Responsible?"
Until the responsible tourism World Conference can take place in Belize, Planeta.com looks forward to carrying on the great debate on responsible tourism on the world wide web.
