The Lanzarote Tourist Board and responsibletravel.com have created an “insiders” Lanzarote travel guide to the island's lesser known holiday hotspots. The guide includes suggestions for the best sustainable places to stay and activities as well as top tips and travel secrets from locals. Exclusively recorded podcasts on culture, activities and nature, from in-the-know locals reveal an island that is so much more than black sand beaches and year-round sun. Get beyond the main resorts and travellers can discover an island rich in music, food, wine, hidden coves, National Parks and endless sporting and cultural events.

The entire island of Lanzarote, thanks to its extraordinarily varied landscape, endemic flora and fauna and the way in which its inhabitants have harmoniously adapted the natural environment for their own uses, was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993. From the spectacular Fire Mountains and lunar landscape of the Timanfaya National Park and the intricate cave formations of Jameos Del Aqua to the action packed surfing beaches of Famara and the avian paradise islands of the Chinijo archipelago, Lanzarote has a depth and beauty, which makes it a totally unique place to visit.

The guide includes a variety of unusual accommodation suggestions on the island. There are luxury Mongolian yurts, super eco-friendly, powered entirely by wind and solar energy, as well as being super stylish, a hotel carved right into the lava rock as and cool bungalows near a great surfing location.

For those after a super-slow break the guide suggests some rural farmhouses and cottages ,tucked away in traditional villages and quiet spots where the locals live a life much unchanged from the past. Nestled between vines and vegetable plots, on a land tinged black by the mineral-rich volcanic soil these pretty houses and country hotels offer a taste of local life, stunning views of the mountains and the coastline and many are surrounded by fruit trees and orchards.

The top tips suggest a visit to the bodegas on the wine route at La Geria, an area of 3000 hectares in the centre of the island where some of the world's best Malvasia wines are produced, to enjoy a glass or two under the sun. And for those who like their sports extreme the rugged landscape, strong winds, good waves and lovely beaches make Lanzarote a paradise for watersports, cycling, scuba diving and sailing.

The guide also offers a monthly events page showing the energy and culture of the island. In just over a week (22 May) there's the annual Lanzarote Ironman and if that's too much for any holiday-maker how about Wine Run Lanzarote next month (20 June) which combines sport and wine with a half marathon in the wine district where you can compete while sampling the delicious local wine along the way! Or requiring a little less energy is Canary Islands Day (30 May) where you'll get to experience local music, food tasting, traditional costumes and uniquely sports such as Lucha Canaria (Canarian fight)!
