It is important for the travel industry to prioritise carbon reduction over carbon offsetting as a long-term strategy. Most replies seem to agree with this viewpoint, and by dropping offsetting in a very public way, ResponsibleTravel.com is making the point very well. It is still hard to get away from the fact that, however hard one tries to reduce emissions, the act of travelling will always have some negative carbon-producing effect and as such, carbon-offsetting programmes do still have a role to play, in my view. But the focus should be very much on reducing the bulk of one's emissions, but it can do no harm to offset the rest. I think "Carbon Caution" sums this up very nicely, as we are looking once again at all the aspects of our trips to see how much more carbon-cautious we can be.
